A Taste of... Grand Lido Negril Jamaica, WI
 |
By Carol and Ray Fischer, our "Romantic Getaways" correspondents. They love to travel, together, to warm places, exciting cities, and any place with a casino. As long as they are together, it doesn't matter where they go. They can always find romance.
Just a scenic hour's drive from Montego Bay on the Northwestern tip of the island of Jamaica sits Superclubs' flagship resort, Grand Lido Negril. Snuggled in a sandy cove, its beaches glisten in the Jamaican sunshine beckoning guests to come and enjoy its
multitude of water sports, fine dining, and pampering service.
No matter how many times we return to Grand Lido Negril, we're never disappointed.
Something magical happens when we step from the shuttle bus and are greeted with a
warm "Welcome Home" by the doorman in his crisp white uniform. We blink as our eyes adjust to the brightness of the whitewashed lobby. The initial impression is one of cleanliness (which we find is, indeed, true of the entire resort). Seconds later we are holding glasses of champagne and toasting the week ahead.
Everything's included--- food, top-shelf liquors, entertainment, water sports, tips, room service, even a complimentary manicure and pedicure. The only time a guest has to reach for a wallet is when purchasing an optional sightseeing tour, souvenirs or spa
services.
Consistency is a theme at Grand Lido Negril; the service, the food, the drinks…guests can always count on an excellent experience each step of the way. And where else can you find complimentary laundry and dry cleaning so you can go home with clean clothes in your suitcase?
Guest accommodations are air-conditioned, comfortable, spacious and attractive, with large private bathrooms (some with huge eight-head Euro Shower Spas, some with oversized Jacuzzis). Amenities include luxury bath products, refrigerator, robes and
slippers, iron and ironing board, direct dial telephone, and safety deposit box. Sunken living areas add to the ambiance of the rooms, and, with the exception of the garden-view locations, windows frame a picture-perfect snapshot of the Caribbean. A private balcony or patio provides a perfect venue to enjoy room service breakfast while watching the resort come alive in the morning.
Guests may choose between the clothing and clothing-optional sides of the resort.
Accommodations are the same on each. The beach on the clothing side is larger and
sandier, but the clothing-optional beach is famous for it's laid back charm and friendliness. The "prudies" sometimes complain that they don't get to meet a lot
of people on the clothing side of the resort. On the "nudie" side it's just the opposite;
an hour after arriving introductions have been made and you're one of the gang. Don't
expect a raunchy environment here. It's mostly people with average bodies who enjoy
the sun, surf, and not having to sit around in a wet bathing suit.
In addition to 24 hour room service, dining options are many at Grand Lido Negril.
Begin the day with an extensive breakfast buffet at the Grand Terraza. Lunch is
available poolside, at the Timber House, Stone House or Beach House, or buffet
style at the Grand Terraza. Later in the day choose from La Pasta with its wonderful
Italian dishes; Munasan, the new Japanese restaurant (by reservation); Café Lido, a candle lit elegantly casual restaurant whose menu changes nightly; or Piacere, Grand Lido's award winning formal French restaurant with its many sumptuous courses and white glove service (by reservation, jackets required for men.) Special evenings include a Beach Party under the stars with island fare and entertainment and a Grand Gala
Buffet with offerings as delicious as they are beautiful.
Activities during the day include a spa and fitness center (extra fees apply for
spa services), tennis (day and night), aerobics, biking, scuba diving, snorkeling, water
skiing, sunfish, volleyball, bingo and other games. Golf is available off site (green fees
are included; clubs, carts and mandatory caddies not included.)
Evening entertainment begins with island-themed presentations at the Grand Terraza, followed by fun in Amici, the
deliciously cool piano bar where Ike has reigned at the ivories for years. The Atlantis
disco jumps until…
