ROMANCEMoon Palace Resort, Cancun Jana M. Jones, NBC 17 Travel Expert
The cool towel and chilled champagne offered at check-in provided fortification for the
trek to our room. (Note: Although the hotel map shows an “internal shuttle transportation” system
operating between the guest rooms, the pool, and the common areas, in the two days of our stay it
remained well hidden and we felt we did a great deal of walking.) This is a huge resort
(2,031 rooms) with two distinct sections: Sunrise and Nizuc. Each has its own lobby, restaurants,
bars, and common areas, and guests are encouraged to use the shuttle operating every 10 minutes
between the two sections to enjoy both.
We were staying at Sunrise, a sprawling Garden of Eden comprising multiple three-story buildings
on either side of the lobby and restaurant areas, with its own swimming pool which is claimed to be
larger than any other in Cancun. The pool wound around itself, past bridges, swim-up bars, into little side whirlpools, and out again. Magnificent! Because it is so spectacular, much of the resort’s activity
seems to center around it. We liked the three-foot ledge submerged around some edges of the pool
With the exception of suites, all guestrooms are basically the same with a balcony or terrace
and a double Jacuzzi. Our balcony had a hammock for two strung from wall to wall (not available
in corner rooms or the Nizuc section) which was ideal for a snuggly afternoon nap or evening star gazing. The Jacuzzi, fitted with molded lounge seats and situated at the sliding glass doors to the balcony (just
where the moon rose over the ocean,) was a great distraction from the evening’s activities at the
lively Disco Andromeda. Once we ventured in to mellow in the warm currents after dinner, we
could barely keep our eyes open, much less go back out to party. We rinsed off the bubbles in the
huge shower for two and were soon fast asleep.
